He was born into a wealthy family of German-speaking Lutheran merchants. His family made a living by brewing beer. In fact, Hevelius himself brewed a famous beer called Jopen.

He was also a leader in his city. He served as a town councillor and helped run the municipal government. Hevelius was a very busy man who balanced business, politics, and the stars.

His passion for the sky led him to build a special observatory.

He placed it on the roofs of his three connected houses. He called this place his "Star Castle," or Sternenburg. He used many different tools to study the heavens. He even built a large telescope with a tube made of wood and wire. This was one of the longest tubed telescopes ever made at that time. Interestingly, he often used tools like the quadrant to make measurements without a telescope.

Hevelius lived during a very important time for science. He was the first Pole to join the Royal Society in London in 1664.

He also received support from four different kings of Poland. One king, John III Sobieski, even helped him by letting him sell his beer freely. In 1679, the young English scientist Edmond Halley came to visit him. Hevelius was a respected member of the global scientific community.

He made many incredible discoveries about space.

He spent four years mapping the surface of the Moon. This work was so good that people call him the "founder of lunar topography." He also found four different comets in the sky. Hevelius named ten new constellations, which are patterns of stars. Seven of these, like Lynx and Vulpecula, are still used by astronomers today.

Elisabeth was a very talented astronomer who helped publish his books. In 1679, a terrible fire destroyed his observatory and many of his books. Even after this hard job, he worked quickly to repair his tools. He died on his 76th birthday in 1687. He was buried in St. Catherine's Church in his home city.
