Upon independence, Ferrier was sworn in as the first president of Suriname. He held this presidency for nearly five years. However, his term ended due to political instability. In 1980, a coup d'état led by Dési Bouterse occurred. This event caused Ferrier to resign from the presidency within six months. Henk Chin A Sen succeeded him as the new president.

In his later years, Ferrier lived in Oegstgeest, a town in the Netherlands. He moved there to be with his relatives after leaving Suriname in 1980. Even in retirement, he remained a storyteller. He shared tales about the spider character Anansi on Dutch television. In 1986, a book called *Het Grote Anansi Boek* was released. The book featured illustrations by Noni Lichtveld and was originally published in monochrome. A color version was released later in 2010.

Ferrier's legacy continues through his family and various honors. His daughter, Kathleen Ferrier, served in the House of Representatives of the Netherlands. In 2005, his memoirs were published under the title *Last Governor, First President: The Century of Johan Ferrier*. He received a knighthood from the Dutch Queen and was made a Grand Cordon in the Honorary Order of the Yellow Star. On May 12, 2010, the Johan Ferrier Fund was launched. This fund, started by his daughter Joan Ferrier, supports educational and cultural projects in Suriname. Ferrier passed away from heart failure on January 4, 2010, at the age of 99.
