She is known as a pioneer of New Journalism. This style uses personal feelings to tell true stories. It often uses novel-like writing to cover real life. Didion wrote about many different things throughout her long career. She wrote about California culture and the 1960s counterculture. She also wrote about politics and foreign policy in Latin America. Her work helped people understand the world around them.

Writing was a big part of her life from the start. As a young child, she began writing things down. When she was a teenager, she typed out Ernest Hemingway's books. She did this to learn how his sentences worked. This helped her master the craft of writing. In 1956, she graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. That same year, she won an essay contest from Vogue magazine. This win led to her first job in writing.

Didion had a very busy and successful career. She worked at Vogue magazine for seven years. Later, she wrote for many famous magazines like The New Yorker. She also wrote many books and movie screenplays. She often worked with her husband, John Gregory Dunne. They wrote scripts for films like A Star Is Born. In 1988, the couple moved from California to New York City. This move changed where she lived and worked.

Many of her books were very important. In 1968, she published Slouching Towards Bethlehem. This was a collection of her magazine pieces about California. In 2005, she won the National Book Award for Nonfiction. This award was for her book The Year of Magical Thinking. This book is a memoir about the death of her husband. She also wrote a book called Blue Nights about aging. In 2013, President Barack Obama gave her the National Humanities Medal.

Her life was full of both success and hard times. She faced health issues like migraines and multiple sclerosis. She also dealt with the loss of her husband and daughter. She wrote about these difficult moments in her books. Her nephew, Griffin Dunne, made a documentary about her in 2017. The film is called The Center Will Not Hold. Didion passed away in 2021. People still read her work to learn about history and life.
