These wars changed the history of China forever.

At first, the Song and the Jin were actually allies. They wanted to work together to defeat the Liao dynasty. The Liao ruled over many people, including the Jurchen tribes. In 1115, a leader named Wanyan Aguda united the Jurchen tribes. He declared the formation of the Jin dynasty. The Song and Jin made a deal to fight the Liao together. The Jin promised to give land called the Sixteen Prefectures to the Song.

However, the alliance soon fell apart due to many arguments. The Jin defeated the Liao much faster than anyone expected. Because they won so quickly, the Jin did not want to give the land to the Song. They also wanted the Song to pay them money. This caused great tension between the two groups. In 1125, the Jin decided to attack the Song. They sent two different armies to strike the Song lands.

The fighting was very intense and changed where people lived. One Jin army attacked the city of Taiyuan. Another army moved toward the Song capital, which was called Bianjing or Kaifeng. In 1127, the Jin captured the capital during the Jingkang Incident. This event forced the Song imperial family to flee to southern China. This move split the dynasty into two parts. These were known as the Northern Song and the Southern Song.

These wars also led to new ways of fighting with technology. Soldiers began using different types of gunpowder weapons. In 1132, there was a siege at De'an where people used a fire lance. This was an early version of a firearm.

These wars occurred between the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty and the Han-led Song dynasty. The Jurchens were a Tungusic-speaking group of semi-agrarian tribes. They lived in northeast Asia, in areas that are now part of Northeast China. These wars lasted for over a century, from the early 1100s until 1234. They fundamentally changed the political and cultural map of China.

The conflict began with an unexpected alliance. In 1115, a Jurchen chieftain named Wanyan Aguda united his tribes. He led a revolt against the Khitan-led Liao dynasty. The Song dynasty saw an opportunity to weaken their common enemy, the Liao. The Song and Jin agreed to work together to defeat the Liao. As part of this deal, the Jin promised to return the Sixteen Prefectures to the Song. These were a line of fortified cities and passes that the Liao had previously taken.

This alliance quickly broke down due to disagreements over territory. The Jin defeated the Liao much faster than the Song expected. Because of this quick victory, the Jin became reluctant to cede the Sixteen Prefectures. Negotiations became bitter and tense between the two empires. In 1123, a treaty was finally reached, but it favored the Jin. The Song had to pay a large annual indemnity. This payment included 300,000 bolts of silk and 200,000 taels of silver.

The Jin eventually launched a full-scale invasion of the Song in 1125. They dispatched two separate armies to strike the Song empire. One army moved through the mountains of Shanxi toward Taiyuan. The other army moved toward the Song capital, Bianjing, also known as Kaifeng. The Song military was caught off guard by these attacks. In 1127, the Jin captured Kaifeng during an event called the Jingkang Incident. They captured the emperor, many officials, and members of the imperial family.

This massive loss forced the Song to retreat to southern China. This retreat divided the dynasty into two distinct periods. The first period was the Northern Song. The second period was the Southern Song. The imperial family eventually established a new capital at Lin'an, which is modern Hangzhou. Although they lost northern territory, the Southern Song remained strong. They regained some lands through the efforts of generals like Yue Fei and Han Shizhong.

The wars also drove significant technological changes in warfare. Soldiers began using various gunpowder weapons during these battles. In 1132, during the siege of De'an, the fire lance was used. A fire lance is an early ancestor of the modern firearm. Other weapons included incendiary arrows and exploding bombs called tiehuopao.

These innovations changed how sieges and battles were fought across East Asia.

The Jin dynasty eventually collapsed in 1234. This happened after the Song dynasty formed an alliance with the Mongols. The Song and Mongols jointly captured Caizhou, the last refuge of the Jin emperor.

However, the Song did not remain the sole power in China. After the Jin fell, the Mongols turned their attention to the Song. The Song dynasty finally collapsed in 1279. This long era of warfare left a lasting impact on Chinese trade, culture, and population.
