Jigawa State is a political division located in the northern region of Nigeria. It is one of the thirty-six states that make up the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Today, the state capital and largest city is Dutse.

Geographically, Jigawa sits in a specific area of northwestern Nigeria. It is positioned between latitudes 11.00°N to 13.00°N and longitudes 8.00°E to 10.15°E. The state shares borders with several other Nigerian states. To the west, it borders Kano State for 355 km and Katsina State for 164 km. To the east, it borders Bauchi State. To the northeast, it shares a 193 km border with Yobe State. Notably, the state also forms an international border with the Republic of Niger. This northern border with the Zinder Region is 70 km long.

The landscape of Jigawa is characterized by undulating land and sand dunes. These dunes can span several kilometres in certain parts of the state. The geological makeup changes depending on where you are. The southern part consists of a basement complex. In contrast, the northeast is made up of sedimentary rocks known as the Chad Formation. Water is a vital part of this landscape. The Hadejia, Kafin Hausa, and Iggi Rivers are the main waterways. The Hadejia–Kafin Hausa River flows from west to east. It passes through the Hadejia–Nguru wetlands and empties into the Lake Chad Basin. This movement of water creates extensive marshlands in the northeast.

Jigawa has a unique climate and vegetation profile. Most of the state lies within the Sudan Savannah. The southern parts contain elements of the Guinea Savannah. The average yearly temperature is 31.23 °C. This is 1.77% higher than the national average for Nigeria. The state faces challenges with desertification and forest depletion. The total forest cover is below the national average of 14.8%. Because of this, the northern part of the state is vulnerable to desert encroachment. Additionally, the state is prone to perennial floods. These floods can cause extensive damage to important farmlands.

The history of the region reaches back to the Neolithic period. In the town of Birnin Kudu, there are famous Dutsen Habude cave paintings. These ancient artworks provide a link to the distant past. The town of Hadejia, formerly known as Biram, is also historically significant. It is recognized as one of the traditional "seven true Hausa states." These historical roots exist alongside the modern political structure. The state is now divided into 27 local government areas. These areas are further subdivided into 77 development areas.

The population is predominantly rural, with 90 percent of residents living outside major cities. In 2002, a survey showed that 45.2 percent of the population were young people under age 15. This creates a dependency ratio of almost 1. This means there is nearly one dependent for every economically active person. The average household size is about 6.7 people.

The economy of Jigawa is heavily dependent on agriculture. More than 80 percent of the population engages in subsistence farming and animal husbandry. The state possesses vast fertile land that supports many tropical crops. This land is considered one of the state's most prized natural resources. Trade is also important, especially in the informal sector. People trade livestock, agricultural goods, and consumer items.

At the border, the town of Maigatari hosts a free trade zone. This zone facilitates cross-border trading with the Republic of Niger. While poverty levels have been noted by the Federal Office of Statistics, many residents do not consider themselves poor. The state continues to develop through improved roads, electricity, and information technology.
