Many jesters worked in royal courts for kings and queens. Others traveled to fairs and markets to perform for common folk. They used many skills to entertain. They told jokes and sang songs. Some did magic tricks or juggling. Others were acrobats who did flips.

Jesters often wore bright clothes. They might wear a hat with bells. They also carried a marotte, which is a small staff. This staff looked like a tiny royal sceptre. Jesters had a special right called jester's privilege. This meant they could mock the king without being punished. This helped them tell the king hard truths.

People all over the world had jesters. They lived in ancient Rome, China, and the Aztec Empire. In India, they were called Vidushakas. These performers were clever friends. They used wit to reveal secrets. Even today, people still perform as jesters at special events.
