Hudson's path to fame began with a major television competition. In 2004, she auditioned for the third season of American Idol. She had previously spent time singing as a Muse from Hercules on Disney cruise ships. During the competition, she achieved the highest number of votes in the "Top 9" group. This happened after her performance of Elton John's "Circle of Life" on April 6, 2004. However, she was eliminated during the "Top 7" show. She performed "Weekend in New England" by Barry Manilow before her exit. Despite this, she remains one of the most famous contestants in the show's history.

Her acting career reached a massive breakthrough in 2006. She was cast as Effie White in the film adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls.

She won this role over hundreds of other professional singers and actresses. Her performance of the song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" earned significant praise. Critics compared her voice to legendary singers like Aretha Franklin. For this role, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. This achievement made her the youngest African-American recipient of that specific award. She also earned a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for her work.

As a recording artist, Hudson has released several successful studio albums. Her self-titled debut album was released in 2008 through Arista Records. This album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. It also won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards. She followed this with the albums I Remember Me in 2011 and JHUD in 2014. Both of these albums reached the top ten on the Billboard 200. Most recently, she signed with Interscope Records for her fourth album, The Gift of Love, in 2024.

Hudson's life in Chicago shaped her early musical interests. She was born on September 12, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in the Englewood area on the South Side. She was the youngest of three children born to Darnell Donerson and Samuel Simpson. Her musical journey started at age seven in her church choir. She also participated in community theater with her grandmother, Julia. She attended Dunbar Vocational High School and graduated in 1999. She often cites artists like Whitney Houston and Patti LaBelle as her inspirations.

Beyond singing and acting, Hudson has expanded into television hosting and production. She served as a coach on the reality series The Voice from 2017 to 2019. In the UK version of the show, she was the first female coach to lead a winning team. In 2022, she launched her own program, The Jennifer Hudson Show. She has also worked behind the scenes as a producer. For example, she won a Tony Award for Best Musical as a producer of A Strange Loop in 2022.
