Jeffersonian democracy was a major political movement in the United States. It lasted from the 1790s until the 1820s.

This movement was named after Thomas Jefferson. He was a leader who believed in many new ideas. The movement focused on the rights of regular people. Jeffersonians wanted to protect individual liberty for everyone. They also wanted a small national government. They believed the government should not have too much power. This helped shape how the United States works today.

How did these leaders think the country should work? They believed in a concept called republicanism. This meant citizens had a duty to help the state. They also had to resist corruption and unfair leaders. Jeffersonians preferred the life of a farmer over city life. They called these people "yeoman farmers." They thought farmers were the best and most independent citizens.

They felt that big cities could lead to corruption. Because of this, they favored agriculture over big business. They also wanted a clear split between church and state. This kept religion and government separate from each other.

This movement grew because of a fight between two political parties. Jefferson founded the Republican Party to oppose the Federalist Party.

Alexander Hamilton led the Federalist Party. The Federalists wanted a very strong national government. They also liked the ways of big bankers and merchants. Jefferson and his followers disagreed with these views. In the election of 1800, Jefferson won the presidency. This event was called the "Revolution of 1800." It showed that the Jeffersonians were now in control.

There were many important facts and dates during this time. In 1803, the United States made the Louisiana Purchase.

This huge deal gave the country much more land for farming. Jeffersonians also used new ways to win elections. A man named John Beckley worked as a campaign manager. In 1796, he gave out 30,000 hand-written voting tickets. This helped many more people participate in voting. By the end of this era, many states allowed more men to vote. This changed how elections worked across the whole country.

These ideas did not disappear after the 1820s. Jeffersonian ideas stayed important for a very long time. They helped lead to the rise of Jacksonian democracy later on. That movement fought for the rights of the "common man." You can even see these ideas in later presidential campaigns. For example, William Jennings Bryan supported many of these same goals. The dream of spreading liberty across the land remained strong. Even today, we still talk about the balance of power. We still wonder how much power a government should have.
