New research began in 2004 under the leadership of Jean-Jacques Hublin. His team performed much more detailed studies of the site. They discovered more than 20 new bones from at least five different individuals. These included adults and children. One child was approximately seven and a half years old. The team also found Irhoud 10 and Irhoud 11. These adult fossils were vital for classifying the species. 
Determining the age of the site required advanced science. Early researchers tried radiocarbon dating. However, the site was too old for that method to work. The fossils were older than 50,000 years. Scientists eventually used thermoluminescence dating. This method measures the age of fire-heated flint artefacts. Some stone tools at the site had been burned by ancient fires. In 2017, these tools were dated to a weighted average of 315,000 years ago. This date was supported by recalculating the age of the Irhoud 3 mandible. That calculation gave a range of 280,000 to 350,000 years ago.
The significance of these dates is massive. These are the earliest known examples of Homo sapiens. Previously, scientists thought modern humans appeared in East Africa 200,000 years ago. The Jebel Irhoud fossils suggest humans were in Africa 100,000 years earlier than expected. This changes our entire understanding of human evolution. It suggests that modern humans were present across the length of Africa. 
This discovery connects to the broader idea of human dispersal. Jean-Jacques Hublin suggests that early Homo sapiens spread across the continent. Elements of human modernity may have appeared in many different places. Instead of starting in one corner, humans may have developed on a continental scale. This means different parts of Africa contributed to the emergence of modern humans. While scientists still seek DNA evidence, the physical features of these fossils point to our own lineage.
