Jean-Pierre Blanchard was a famous inventor from France. He was a pioneer of gas balloon flight. This means he was one of the first people to fly in a balloon filled with hydrogen gas.

In 1784, he made his first successful flight in Paris. Later, he moved to London. He tried to use wings and even a windmill to move his balloon. These ways did not work well. However, he did something very big in 1785. He flew across the English Channel. This trip took about two and a half hours. He flew from Dover Castle in England to Guînes in France.

Blanchard also showed people how a parachute works. A parachute is a tool that helps a person land safely. He even used one to escape when his balloon broke in 1793. He used silk to make his parachutes. Silk is strong and light.

In 1793, he flew a balloon in America. He flew from a jail in Philadelphia. Many leaders watched him, including George Washington. In 1808, Blanchard had a heart attack while in his balloon. He died a year later from his injuries.
