Gleason is well known for the Wug Test.

WugTest

In this test, she showed kids pictures of made-up creatures. One creature was called a "wug." She asked kids to use the word in a sentence. For example, she might say, "This is a wug. Now there are two..."

This test showed something amazing. Even young children know the rules of language. They do not just memorize words. They can use rules to change new words. They can make a word plural or change its tense. This means they understand how language works.

Gleason also studied how parents talk to their children. She looked at how mothers and fathers speak. She found that fathers often give more commands. She also studied how kids learn polite routines. These are things like saying "thank you" or "please." Her work helps us understand how kids grow.
