He was a sociologist and a philosopher. This means he studied how societies work and how people think. He was very interested in media and new technology. He also looked at how we use signs to understand the world. A sign is something that stands for something else. For example, a word or a picture can be a sign.

Baudrillard wanted to know how these signs change our lives.

One of his biggest ideas was called hyperreality. He believed that we live in a world full of signs. These signs can sometimes feel more real than the actual world. This happens when we try to make everything look perfect and clear. Baudrillard thought that too many images can hide the real world. This can make people feel unsure or even afraid. He also studied how we buy things in a society. He felt that we often buy things to show who we are. This is different from just buying things because we need them.

Baudrillard was born in Reims, France, in 1929. His father worked as a gendarme, which is a type of police officer. He went to university in Paris to study German language and literature. Later, he moved into the study of sociology. He wrote a famous book called The System of Objects in 1968. He taught at many places, like the University of Paris-Nanterre. He even traveled to the United States and Japan. In 1981, he received his first camera in Japan. This led him to become a photographer later in life.

Baudrillard was part of a group of French thinkers. These thinkers were interested in how meaning is made. He believed meaning comes from how signs relate to each other. For instance, a "dog" means "dog" because it is not a "cat." This web of meaning is very large and complex. He wrote many important books during his career. Some of these were Simulacra and Simulation and The Intelligence of Evil. He also wrote about the Gulf War in 1991. His books reached many people around the world.

In his personal life, Baudrillard had many interests. He loved listening to classical music and rock music. He also liked to use an old typewriter for his work. He did not like using a computer for writing. He said the typewriter gave him a physical connection to his words. He was married twice and had two children. He lived in Paris for a long time. He died in 2007 at the age of 77. Even after he died, people still study his big ideas today.
