Roofs are a very important part. They are often large and gently curved. These big roofs cover porches called verandas. In temples, complex wood parts called tokyō support them. Large roofs can make the inside feel dim and calm.

Inside, walls are often thin or movable. People use sliding doors called fusuma. They also use paper windows called shōji. These allow people to change the size of a room. Many people sit on tatami mats, which are straw floor mats. They do not use chairs or beds.

In the past, people lived in simple pit houses. Later, they built large temples. Some wooden buildings at Hōryū-ji are very old. They are the oldest wooden buildings in the world. Today, Japan is a leader in new building technology. They mix old ways with modern design.
