He was a leader in a type of medicine called homeopathy. This way of healing uses very small amounts of substances. These substances are called remedies. Homeopaths believe these remedies can help the body heal itself. They use a idea called "similars." This means they use a substance that might cause certain symptoms in a healthy person. They believe this can help a sick person fight an ailment. Kent was a very important person in this field of medicine.

His work followed a very specific way of thinking. Kent believed in a "vital force" inside living things. He also believed that sickness could have spiritual causes. He thought medicine and theology, or religious study, were connected. He did not agree with the germ theory of disease. This is the idea that tiny germs cause sickness. Instead, he focused on the connection between the spirit and the body. He believed a person exists from their spiritual part to their natural part. This view shaped how he treated his patients.

Kent had a long and busy career. He was born on March 31, 1849, in Woodhull, New York. He went to Madison University and graduated in 1868. He also studied at the Institute of Eclectic Medicine in Ohio. In 1874, he married a woman named Ellen in St. Louis, Missouri. Later, he married Clara Louis Tobey, who was also a doctor. Clara helped him finish his famous books. Kent worked as a professor in many different places. He taught in Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Chicago.

One of his biggest achievements was a huge guidebook.

He published it in 1897. It is called the Repertory of the Homeopathic Materia Medica. This book lists many symptoms and the remedies that match them. It became a blueprint for doctors all over the world. Many people still use his work today. His books were even translated into many different languages. He gained many followers in the country of India. His writings helped spread his ideas across the globe.

Kent's life shows how one event can change a person's path. He first practiced a different kind of medicine called eclecticism. His second wife, Lucy, became very ill in 1878. Many doctors could not help her. Then, a homeopathic doctor named Dr. Richard Phelan helped her. She made a very fast recovery after his treatment. This event made Kent want to study homeopathy himself. He spent the rest of his life teaching and writing about it. He died in Stevensville, Montana, in 1916 at age 67.
