James Prescott Joule was a famous English physicist.

He was born in 1818 to a wealthy brewer. Joule spent much of his life managing a brewery. However, he was also a very curious scientist. He wanted to understand how heat works. His work helped us learn how energy moves. Today, we use the name "joule" for a unit of energy.

At that time, many people believed in the caloric theory. This idea said heat was a fluid. People thought this fluid could not be created or destroyed. Joule wanted to test if this was true. He studied how electricity makes heat in a wire. He found that heat was related to electric current. This helped him see that heat could be changed. He proved that work can turn into heat.

Joule used many clever ways to prove his ideas. He used a falling weight to spin a paddle wheel. This wheel sat inside a barrel of water. As the weight fell, it did mechanical work. This work made the water get warmer.

He also forced water through a tiny cylinder. He even measured heat when compressing a gas. These tests showed that work and heat are linked. He found the mechanical equivalent of heat.

Joule faced many hard jobs during his career. Many scientists did not believe his precise measurements. He claimed to measure temperature very accurately. He used his experience from the brewery to help. He also worked with a maker named John Dancer. In 1843, he shared his results in Cork. Many people met him with silence. He did not give up on his work. He kept testing and writing new papers.

Later, Joule worked with a man named Lord Kelvin.

They had a long partnership through letters. Joule did the experiments to find facts. Kelvin helped explain the math behind them. Together, they helped people accept the law of conservation of energy. This law says energy is not lost. It only changes from one form to another. Their work changed how we see the world.
