Hogg did not go to school for a long time. His father was a farmer who lost his money. Because of this, James had to work on farms. He worked as a farm servant and a shepherd. A shepherd is someone who looks after sheep. He learned to read while he worked in the fields. He used books from a library and from his employer.

He even taught himself to play the fiddle. He saved his own money to buy the instrument in 1784. This hard work helped him become a great writer.

His life was full of many different jobs and travels. He worked for a man named James Laidlaw at Blackhouse. Hogg said Laidlaw was like a father to him. In 1802, he went on tours of the Highlands. He wanted to find a farm of his own. He even tried to find a farm on the island of Harris. He also worked as a sheep drover. This job helped him learn about the Scottish Highlands. These experiences gave him many ideas for his stories and poems.

Hogg wrote many famous books and poems during his life. In 1801, he published a booklet called "Scottish Pastorals." He also wrote a popular song called "Donald Macdonald" around 1803. His most famous novel is "The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner." He wrote this book in 1824. He also wrote a long poem called "The Queen's Wake" in 1813.

He published collections of songs like "Jacobite Relics" in 1819. He was a very busy and talented writer.

Being a famous writer was sometimes a hard job for Hogg. He was friends with many great writers like Sir Walter Scott. However, some writers in "Blackwood's Magazine" were not very kind. They sometimes made fun of him in their pages. This made him feel sad and angry at times. Even with these hard times, he kept writing. He shared the folk tales and songs of Scotland with the world. Today, we remember him for his skill and his stories.
