James Goldsmith was a man who worked with money.

He was born in Paris, France. When he was young, his family had to flee France. This happened when Nazi Germany took over the country in 1940. They left their hotels behind to escape.

Later, James became a businessman. He bought many different companies. He bought food businesses and companies that sold medicines. He also bought large amounts of timberland, which is land with many trees.

He was very good at finding value in these lands.

Some people in the news did not like his ways. They called him a corporate raider. This meant he bought companies to change how they worked. He said his way helped companies run better.

He often had fights with newspapers in court.

James also cared about politics. In 1994, he was elected to the European Parliament. He started a group called the Referendum Party. This group wanted Britain to leave the European Union. He was a very busy and famous man.
