He is best known for bringing the ghazal back into the spotlight. A ghazal is a traditional Indian classical art form. Singh changed how people heard this music. He chose poems that regular people could relate to. He also made sure the melodies helped people feel the meaning of the words. This style is called Bol-pradhan, which means the words are the most important part. His work helped make this ancient art feel new and exciting for everyone.

His way of making music was very special and clever. He wanted to make ghazals more acceptable to modern tastes. To do this, he used simple poems and simple tunes. He even added western instruments to make the songs feel more lively.

In 1977, he released an album called The Unforgettable. This was a very important moment in music history. It featured songs where he and his wife, Chitra Dutta, sang together. This husband-and-wife team became very successful in Indian popular music.

Jagjit Singh's journey began in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. He was born on February 8, 1941, into a Punjabi family. His father, Sardar Amar Singh Dhiman, was a government surveyor. While his father hoped he would be an engineer, Singh loved music. He studied the Hindustani classical tradition very deeply. He learned from masters like Pandit Chagan Lal Sharma and Ustad Jamal Khan. In 1965, he moved to Bombay to find more work. He started by singing jingles for advertisements before becoming a famous film singer.

Throughout his long career, Singh achieved many great things. He sang in many languages like Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, and Bengali. His 1987 album, Beyond Time, was the first digitally recorded release in India. He composed music for famous films like Prem Geet and Arth. He also worked on the TV show Mirza Ghalib. For his great skill, the Indian government gave him the Padma Bhushan in 2003. In 2014, the government even released two postage stamps to honor him. He was a truly influential artist for many decades.

Music was a big part of his life, even during hard times. He faced sadness when his son, Vivek, died in a road accident in 1990. This loss was very difficult for his whole family. Even so, Singh continued to perform and share his gift with the world. He used his fame to help many people through charity work. He supported groups like Save the Children and Bombay Hospital. His life shows how music can connect people through joy and through sorrow.
