He was a leading artistic figure in Zagreb and a prominent modern sculptor. His work is celebrated for its strong plastic expression and emotional depth. He often used his art to explore themes of national identity and myth. Through his sculptures and buildings, he shaped how people visualized their history and culture. His legacy remains visible in many public monuments and architectural projects across Europe and America.

To create his monumental works, Meštrović followed a path of rigorous technical training. He began as an apprentice in a stone workshop in Split. There, he learned the fundamentals of stonemasonry from Pavle Bilinić. He later moved to Vienna to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. In Vienna, he studied under Edmund von Hellmer and Otto Wagner. He also traveled extensively to study ancient and Renaissance masters. He was particularly influenced by Michelangelo and French sculptors like Auguste Rodin. This diverse education allowed him to master various textures and styles.
