Itch

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An itch is a strong sensation in your skin. Doctors call this feeling pruritus. It is very different from feeling pain. When you feel pain, your body uses a withdrawal reflex. This means you pull away to protect yourself. An itch causes a scratch reflex instead. This reflex makes you reach for the spot. It often feels like a foreign object is on your skin. This urge helps you remove things like small insects.

How does this sensation work in your body? It all starts with nerve fibers in your skin. These fibers send signals through a path called the spinothalamic tract. This path carries information to your central nervous system. Some itches are caused by histamine, a substance in your body. Other itches are nonhistaminergic, which means they work a different way. In the spinal cord, special cells called interneurons help pass the signal. These cells help the message reach your brain so you feel the itch.

Scientists have studied many different kinds of itches. They have found that some itches come from the skin. This is called pruritoceptive itch. Other itches are neuropathic, meaning they come from damage to the nervous system. There is also neurogenic itch, which is caused centrally without nerve damage. Some people feel a "psychogenic itch" from psychiatric disorders. Researchers also use tools like mRNA sequencing to study genes. They look for specific gene clusters that help transmit itch information.

Many things can cause an itch to start. Tiny living things like scabies, lice, or bed bugs can cause it.

Some people have an allergy to things like poison ivy. Even dry skin in the winter can make you itch. If an itch lasts longer than six weeks, it is called chronic pruritus. If it is felt all over the body, it is called generalized itch.

Itching is a part of life that almost everyone knows. You might notice that scratching can feel good. This is because scratching has hedonic aspects, which means it can be pleasurable. However, this can be a hard job for people with skin diseases. They might scratch until the skin no longer feels anything. It is also interesting how pain can stop an itch. Things like heat or rubbing can sometimes inhibit the itching feeling. This shows how complex our sense of touch really is.
