This name means the "House of Natural Sciences." In 1933, the school was reorganized again. This change followed new reforms by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This made it the first university in modern Turkey.

Many scientists from Germany also came to teach there later on.

Over the centuries, the school underwent many stages of reorganization.

In 1863, an institution called the Darülfünûn-u Osmanî was created. This was later known as the Ottoman House of Multiple Sciences. In 1900, it was reorganized as the Darülfünûn-u Şahâne, or the Royal Polytechnic Institute. By 1912, it was called İstanbul Darülfünûnu and offered a modernized curriculum. This included schools for medicine, law, applied sciences, literature, and theology. In 1933, following reforms by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, it was officially reorganized as İstanbul Üniversitesi.

It sits adjacent to Beyazıt Square, a site with ancient roots. This area was once the Forum Tauri during the Roman period. Later, it was enlarged by Theodosius the Great as the Forum of Theodosius. Because of this long history, Roman and Byzantine ruins are still visible on the grounds. The university's main building stands on the site of the Old Palace. This was the first palace built by the Ottoman Turks in Istanbul.

The main building itself has a very interesting architectural history.

Designed by the French architect Bourgerois, it was completed between 1865 and 1866. From 1879, the building served as the Ottoman Empire's Ministry of War. Today, the Rector's Office occupies the room that was once the Minister of War's office. This room even contains the desk of Enver Pasha, who served from 1914 to 1918. Another room, the Kılıçlık Hall, was once used for sword-donning ceremonies for officers. The building has survived an earthquake in 1894 and has undergone several restorations.

The university is also home to a massive collection of knowledge. The Rare Books Library was designed by Kemaleddin Bey in 1913. It holds approximately 93,000 volumes, including printed books and manuscripts. These works are written in many languages, such as Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Greek, and Latin. The library also contains the Abdülhamid II Collection, which features 36,585 photographs. This collection makes the university a vital center for studying intellectual history. It even holds collections from prominent figures in Turkish politics.

Istanbul University has produced many highly successful and influential people.

For example, Aziz Sancar won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Orhan Pamuk won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The university has also educated many political leaders. This includes six Prime Ministers of Turkey and former President Abdullah Gül. Interestingly, the alumni list also includes several leaders from Israel. These include Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, the longest-serving President of Israel, and Prime Ministers David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Sharett.
