Islamic cultures refer to the historic cultural practices developed among diverse peoples in the Muslim world. These practices are often influenced by Islam, which acts as a conduit for inter-mingling different ethnic groups. This shared religious identity allows various backgrounds to come together through common customs.

Early Muslim culture relied on Arab, Byzantine, and Persian practices. As Islamic empires expanded, they assimilated many more influences. These included Turkic, Malay, Somali, Berber, and Indonesian traditions. This expansion created a vast, interconnected cultural network.

Language and literature are central to these cultural expressions. Arabic literature includes both prose and poetry. The Arabic term for literature is Adab, which implies etiquette, culture, and enrichment.

The Quran is widely regarded as the finest piece of Arabic literature. It has had a massive lasting effect on Arabic culture. Arabic writing flourished during the Islamic Golden Age. Today, poets and prose-writers continue to achieve success across the Arab world. This literary tradition remains vibrant and active.

Persian literature is one of the world's oldest, spanning over 2,500 years. It includes oral and written texts in Western Iranian languages. These sources come from Greater Iran, including modern Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan.

The poet Rumi is one of the most beloved figures in this tradition. He was born in the Khorasan region and lived in Anatolia. Persian literature also includes works by non-ethnic Persians. Turkic, Caucasian, and Indian writers have used Persian in Persianate societies. Some scholars call it one of the four main bodies of world literature.

Persian influence reached far into South Asia through various empires. The Ghaznavids, Delhi Sultanate, and Mughal Empire all used Persian as an official language.

In India, Persian artistic forms like the ghazal affected Urdu literature. Interestingly, more Persian literature was produced in India than in the Iranian world. Even in the 20th century, the poet Allama Iqbal chose Persian for major works. This shows how a language can travel and grow in new lands. It became a bridge between different political and social systems.

In the Turkic-speaking world, Persian served as an official language for centuries. The Seljuks and later the Ottomans adopted Persian for courtly use.

However, the Ottoman Empire saw the rise of Ottoman Turkish. By the 18th century, Ottoman Turkish became the official language for poetry and prose. Even then, scientific works often contained up to 88% Persian and Arabic loanwords. This highlights the deep linguistic connection between these different empires. It shows how languages borrow from one another to express complex ideas.

Islamic art often focuses on non-representational designs. Artists frequently use plant forms, such as the spiraling arabesque.

These are often combined with geometric patterns and calligraphy. Calligraphy is the art of beautiful, decorative writing. While some traditions avoid depicting living beings, others have long traditions of using human and animal figures. Persian, Mughal, and Ottoman miniatures often include many figures. These small, detailed paintings were often private works owned by the elite. They offer a window into the lives and stories of the past.

In different regions, Islamic culture blends with local traditions. In Indonesia, the art of Wayang Kulit uses shadow puppetry.

This art form reflects a melding of indigenous and Islamic sensibilities. In Bengal, Muslim writers have enriched the Bengali language for over 600 years. They explored themes of cosmology, love, and history. Some writers even produced early feminist science fiction. These diverse examples show how a single identity can support many different ways of life.
