This number helps people find the right book.

An ISBN is not just for one title. Each version of a book needs its own number. A hardcover book has one number. A paperback book gets a different number. An e-book also needs its own code.

However, a simple reprint of the same book uses the same number.

ISBNs have changed over time. Before 2007, they were ten digits long. Since January 1, 2007, they are thirteen digits long.

These numbers have many parts. They show the country or language group. They also show the publisher. They even include a check digit. A check digit is a final number used to make sure the code is correct.

Many countries use these numbers. The United States uses the most ISBNs. In 2020, it had 3.9 million registrations. Other big users include South Korea and Germany.
