He is celebrated as one of the greatest prose writers of Russian Jewry. Babel possessed a unique ability to observe the world from many different perspectives. He wrote about peasants, soldiers, priests, and artists with equal depth. His work often explored the complex lives of people living on the edges of society. Through his storytelling, he brought the diverse social landscape of the early 20th century to life.

Babel’s writing process was deeply rooted in his experience as a journalist. He believed that journalistic work provided an incredible amount of material for fiction.

He actively sought out friendships with people from all walks of life. These included morgue attendants, criminal investigators, and government clerks. He used these real-life encounters to gather facts and observe human behavior. These details became invaluable creative tools when he transitioned to writing short stories. By studying these "subjects," he could place character types and everyday situations into a realistic perspective.

His literary output can be divided into several distinct and significant categories. First, he wrote collections of short stories like *Red Cavalry* and the *Odessa Stories*. These works captured the intense realities of war and the criminal underworld.

Although he was educated by private tutors after being blocked from local schools, his learning was vast. He studied the Talmud and music, and he was fluent in several languages. He was at home in Yiddish and Hebrew, but he also mastered Russian, Ukrainian, and French. His early stories were even composed in fluent literary French. This linguistic breadth allowed him to engage with a wide range of European literary traditions.

In 1915, Babel moved to Petrograd, defying laws that restricted Jewish movement. There, he met the influential writer Maxim Gorky. Gorky published some of Babel's stories in the magazine *Letopis*. Gorky also provided crucial advice, suggesting that Babel gain more life experience to improve his writing. Babel felt immense admiration for Gorky throughout his life. This mentorship helped launch Babel's career during a period of massive political change in Russia.

Babel's work often carried significant social and political weight. *Red Cavalry* documented the horrors of the Polish-Soviet War of 1920. His unvarnished descriptions of military brutality earned him powerful enemies, including Marshal Semyon Budyonny.

Similarly, his *Odessa Stories* featured the famous anti-hero Benya Krik. These stories were set in the Odessa ghetto and were later adapted into films and plays. While some critics praised his work, others found his depictions of the bourgeoisie or the realities of war to be controversial or contradictory.

Tragically, Babel's career was cut short by the Soviet government. In May 1939, the NKVD arrested him on fabricated charges of espionage and terrorism.
