He was born on January 1, 1983, in Muridke. His family was very poor and lived in the Punjab region. His father, Saif Masih, needed money to marry off one of his sons. Because he could not get a bank loan, he took 600 rupees from a carpet factory owner. To pay this back, he gave his children to the owner as collateral. This unfair system is called bonded labour. It meant children had to work to pay off a debt.

Life at the carpet factory was very hard for young Iqbal. He was only four years old when he started working. The factory owner, Ashad, made him work up to 14 hours every day. Iqbal was even chained to a loom while he worked. He was paid only 1 rupee a day for his labor. Because he was not fed well, he was very small for his age. At age 12, he had the weight of a 6-year-old. The debt grew to 13,000 rupees because of high interest rates.

At age 10, Iqbal decided to escape from the factory. He learned that the Supreme Court of Pakistan had made bonded labour illegal. After escaping, he went to a special school for former child slaves. This school was run by the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, or BLLF. Iqbal was a very fast learner in school. He finished four years of education in only two years. He wanted to become a lawyer to help more people.

Iqbal became a famous activist around the world. He helped more than 3,000 children escape from bonded labour. He traveled to many places like Sweden and the United States. In 1994, he won the Reebok Human Rights Award in Boston. He spoke to many people about how to end child slavery. Sadly, he was killed by a group called the "carpet mafia" on April 16, 1995. He was only 12 years old. Many people in Lahore protested to demand an end to child labour.

For example, there is a square named for him in Spain. In 2000, he received the World's Children's Prize for the Rights of the Child. The United States Congress even created an award for him in 2009. His life reminds us to keep fighting for fairness for all children.
