Devices use numbers to talk on a network. These are called IP addresses. An IP address is a label for a device. It helps the network find where a device is. It also tells the network how to reach it.

One type is called IPv4. This was first used in 1983. It uses 32 bits to make a number. A bit is a tiny part of a computer number. As the internet grew, we ran out of IPv4 addresses. This happened during the 2010s.

To fix this, experts made IPv6. This new version uses 128 bits. This gives us a much larger space for addresses.

Both types work side by side today.

Some addresses are for private networks. These are used by machines that do not need the public internet. A network admin can give out addresses in a fixed way. They can also give them out in a changing way. A group called IANA helps manage these numbers globally. They give blocks of numbers to regional groups. These groups then share them with local providers.
