language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

English is used by people all over the world. This idea is called International English. It helps people from many lands talk to each other. People use many names for it. Some call it Global English or World English.

English started in England long ago. It grew from old ways of speaking. Many groups added new words to it. The Vikings brought words like "they" and "them." Later, French words became part of the language too. This changed how English sounded and looked.

As time went on, English moved to new places. It went to North America in 1607. It went to Australia in 1788. It also reached Africa and Asia. Today, English is used for big jobs. People use it for news, schools, and flying planes.

One expert, Braj Kachru, described three groups of English users. The first group lives in places like the UK and the USA. The second group uses English for official work in countries like India. The third group uses it for business and travel. Now, more people speak English as a second language than as a first language!
