This work is much more than simply choosing decorations. It is a professional discipline that requires a keen eye for detail and creative flair. Designers must master several complex tasks to complete a project successfully. These tasks include conceptual development, space planning, and site inspections. They also perform programming, research, and construction management. To guide their work, they apply fundamental design principles used in the visual arts. These principles help viewers understand the mood and purpose of a specific scene.

The process of interior design follows a structured sequence of professional actions. It begins with research and programming to understand the needs of the stakeholders. Designers then move into conceptual development to create a vision for the space. Space planning is a critical step where the designer determines how people will move through the area. Once the plan is set, the designer must coordinate and manage the execution of the design. This often involves communicating with many different people involved in a project. They may also perform site inspections to ensure the construction matches the original plan. By managing these steps, a designer transforms a shell of a building into a functional environment.

Throughout history, the role of the designer has shifted through various stages and types. In ancient times, interior design was often an instinctive part of the building process. In ancient India, architects frequently acted as interior designers. This is reflected in the mythology of Vishwakarma, a god who was an architect. In 17th-century Indian homes, designers used sculptures of ancient texts to decorate palaces. During medieval times, wall art paintings became common in havelis, which were palace-like mansions. Today, about 2,000 havelis remain in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. These structures still display beautiful wall art paintings from the past.

Ancient Egypt provides another historical perspective through "soul houses." These were small models of houses placed in tombs to hold food offerings. By studying these models, historians can see how Egyptian dynasties designed ventilation, columns, and loggias. In the first millennia BC, the Greeks and Romans introduced coordinated, decorative mosaic floors. They also created templated interiors for bath houses, shops, and temples. Roman architects like Vitruvius even wrote about these forms in "The Ten Books on Architecture." These early developments laid the groundwork for specialized guilds to produce furniture and decoration.

The profession changed significantly during the industrial era. In the 17th and 18th centuries, decorating was usually the job of a homemaker or a craftsman. However, the mid-to-late 19th century saw a massive expansion in design services. As the middle class grew in wealth, they sought domestic trappings to show their status. Large furniture firms began offering full house furnishings in many different styles.

This business model flourished until 1914, when independent designers began to take over. By the 1950s and 1960s, the industry became even more complex. Firms began employing large teams of specialists, including joiners, plasterers, textile designers, and engineers.

One of the most influential figures in this transition was Owen Jones. In 1851, he managed the decoration and exhibit arrangement for the Crystal Palace. He used a controversial palette of red, yellow, and blue for the ironwork. In 1856, he published "The Grammar of Ornament," which formulated 37 key principles of design. His work helped popularize design theories among the middle class. In America, the Herter Brothers became a pioneering firm. They moved from being an upholstery warehouse to managing every aspect of interior furnishing. They handled everything from decorative paneling to patterned floors and draperies.

The turn of the 20th century marked the true emergence of professional interior design. In England, the formation of the Institute of British Decorators in 1899 helped formalize the field. By 1915, the London Directory listed 127 professional decorators. In America, Edith Wharton and architect Ogden Codman wrote "The Decoration of Houses" in 1897. This book was a seminal work that criticized the heavy, overstuffed Victorian style. They argued that such designs prioritized upholstery over proper space planning. This shift led to the rise of professionals like Elsie de Wolfe, who embraced more functional and architectural design.
