The Institutional Revolutionary Party, known as the PRI, is a major political party in Mexico.

For most of the twentieth century, it acted as a de-facto one-party state. This means the party held almost all the power in the country. It controlled the presidency, the Senate, and most state governors. Because it was so strong, the party became deeply linked to the nation itself. Many people saw the PRI as the main face of the Mexican government.

The party stayed in power by using many different methods. It used a system called corporatism to bring different groups into its fold. Sometimes the party used co-option to bring people into its ranks. Other times, it used electoral fraud to win elections. There were also instances of political repression to keep control. The party even had specialists called "alchemists" who worked on rigging votes. They used a practice called "hauling" to move supporters to rallies.

The history of the PRI began with a period of great change. It was founded in 1929 as the National Revolutionary Party.

A leader named Plutarco Elías Calles started it to help leaders from the Mexican Revolution work together. This was needed after the president-elect, Álvaro Obregón, was killed in 1928.

The party changed its name to the PRM in 1938. It finally became the PRI in 1946. It held uninterrupted power for 71 years until the year 2000.

Throughout its long rule, the party's ideas shifted many times. Under President Lázaro Cárdenas, the party moved toward the left.

He made big changes like taking control of the oil and telephone industries. After he left, the party began to move toward the right. By the 1980s, it followed neoliberal policies and free-market capitalism. This shift happened under leaders like Manuel Ávila Camacho. These changes caused many members to leave and form new parties.

The PRI has faced many ups and downs in recent years. In 2000, the party lost the presidency for the first time in decades.

It did win the presidency again in 2012 with Enrique Peña Nieto. However, people were unhappy with his administration. This led to the party losing the presidency in 2018 and 2024. These recent losses were some of the worst in the party's history. Today, the PRI is working to change its image once again.
