The party changed its name two times over the years. It finally became the PRI in 1946.

The PRI held power in Mexico for 71 years. During this time, the party was very strong. It controlled the Senate and the state governors. The party used many ways to stay in charge. Sometimes they used unfair ways to win elections. This led to many problems in the country. Some people felt they had no freedom. In 1968, students held protests in Mexico City. This was a very sad time for the people.

The party's ideas changed a lot over time. Under Lázaro Cárdenas, the party moved to the left.

Later, the party moved to the right. In the year 2000, the PRI lost the presidency. They later won it again in 2012. But they lost the presidency again in 2018 and 2024.
