Infraspecific name

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Plants have many different names. Sometimes, a plant belongs to a small group. This group is smaller than a species. We call these small groups infraspecific taxa. Scientists use special rules to name them. These rules come from a set of laws called the ICN.

An infraspecific name has three main parts. First is the genus name. Next is the specific epithet. This is a special word for the species. The third part is a connecting term. This term shows the rank of the group. It might be a variety or a subspecies. For example, *Astrophytum myriostigma* subvar. *glabrum* is a name for a subvariety. In this name, *glabrum* is the infraspecific epithet.

Scientists also use a type to name plants. A type is often a dried plant. It is kept in a place called a herbarium. To name a new group, scientists compare it to the type. If a new group is made, the type gets a name too. This name is called an autonym. It uses the same name as the species. This keeps the names clear and correct.
