Inductor

An inductor is a very important part used in electronic circuits.

You might also hear it called a coil, a choke, or a reactor. It is a passive component, which means it does not create its own energy. Instead, it stores energy inside a magnetic field. This happens whenever an electric current flows through the wire. Because they can store energy this way, inductors are one of the three main building blocks of electronic circuits, along with resistors and capacitors.

How does an inductor work? Most inductors are made by winding an insulated wire into a coil or a helix shape. When electricity flows through this wire, it creates a magnetic field around it. If the current changes, the magnetic field also changes. This change creates a voltage, which is a push of electricity. This process follows Faraday's law of induction. According to Lenz's law, this new voltage will always try to fight the change that created it.

If the current tries to increase, the inductor pushes back to stop it. If the current tries to slow down, the inductor helps keep it moving.

People have been studying these effects for a long time. The name "inductor" may come from Heinrich Daniel Ruhmkorff. In 1851, he invented a special device called an induction coil, which he named an "inductorium." Later, American scientist Joseph Henry helped us understand these ideas. We even named the unit of inductance after him. This unit is called the henry (H).

There are many different ways to measure and build inductors. Inductance is the ratio of voltage to the rate of change in current. Most inductors have values between 1 microhenry and 20 henries. To make the magnetic field even stronger, engineers often put a core inside the coil. This core is often made of iron or a material called ferrite.

Using a magnetic core can make the inductance many thousands of times larger than an air-filled coil.

Inductors are used in many things you see every day. They are very common in radio equipment and alternating current (AC) electronics. Some inductors are designed specifically to block AC while letting direct current (DC) pass through. These are called chokes.

They are also used in electronic filters to separate different signals. When you use an inductor with a capacitor, you can make a tuned circuit. This is how you tune a radio or a TV to find the right station.
