Inductor

An inductor is a part used in many electronic circuits.

It is often made by winding a wire into a coil. When an electric current flows through the wire, it creates a magnetic field around it.

This magnetic field stores power. If the current changes, the magnetic field also changes. This change makes a voltage, which is a push of electricity. A rule called Lenz's law says this voltage will fight the change. If the current tries to grow, the inductor pushes back. If the current tries to slow down, the inductor helps it. This means inductors oppose any change in the flow of electricity.

Many inductors have a core made of iron or ferrite inside the coil.

This core makes the magnetic field much stronger. This increases the inductance, which is a measure of how much the part resists changes in current. The unit for this is the henry. Inductors are very useful in radio equipment. They can block certain types of electricity. Some are called chokes when they do this. They also help tune radios and TVs to the right signals.
