An Indian reservation is a piece of land. It is held by a Native American tribal nation.

The U.S. government officially recognizes these tribes. Each tribe has its own government. This government is autonomous, which means it can lead itself.

However, they must still follow some U.S. laws. Because of this, tribal rules can be different from nearby states. For example, some reservations allow casinos.

History shows how these lands began. In the past, many Native American groups were moved. This happened through treaties or by force. This was often very hard for the tribes. It changed how they lived and worked.

Today, there are 574 recognized tribes in the U.S. They govern more than 326 reservations. Some tribes share a reservation. Others do not have one at all. Most reservations are in the West. The Navajo Nation Reservation is the largest one. It is about the size of West Virginia. Many Native Americans also live in big cities now. In 2012, one million people lived on reservations.
