Sometimes we have many small facts. We can group them together. This makes a big score. We call this score an index.

An index is a way to show changes in a group. It combines many different pieces of data into one number. This helps us rank things.

There are many types of indices. The Human Development Index is one example. The Gender Gap Index is another. These help us see how the world is changing. These scores are growing more common now. This is because more people can read data. Our world is also getting more complex. Computers also help us find this information.

Making an index takes many steps. One person named Earl Babbie says we must pick the right items. We must also check how they work together. We often give each item the same weight. Weight means how much each part counts toward the final score. Sometimes, one part might count more than another. In 2008, a handbook gave ten steps to make these scores. These steps include picking data and making a visual picture.
