Today, incandescent bulbs are often replaced by more modern lighting technologies. Most can be swapped for fluorescent lamps, high-intensity discharge lamps, or light-emitting diode (LED) lamps.
Despite being less efficient for general lighting, the heat produced by these bulbs is useful in specific applications. The intense heat can be used in heat lamps for incubators or in lava lamps.
