Impressment was a way to force people into military service. It was most common in navies. Groups called press gangs used fear and force to find men. They would take people to serve on warships. This was often called "the press." Many people in Europe used this method during wars. It was a way to find enough workers for large fleets.

How did this work in practice? The Royal Navy looked for men with seafaring habits. They usually targeted men between 18 and 55 years old. Sometimes they even took people who were not sailors. The British Army tried a small version of this too. They looked for men who were fit and able-bodied. These men had to be at least 5 feet 3 inches tall. They also had to be between 16 and 50 years old.

This practice has a long history in England. Legal rules for it go back to King Edward I. In the 1600s, some people began to value personal liberty more. The British Army stopped using impressment and used volunteers instead. However, the Navy kept using it to stay strong. The Navy needed huge numbers of men for its many ships. In the late 1700s, the Navy needed 40,000 extra men very quickly.

Life at sea was often very difficult for these men. Many sailors died from a sickness called scurvy. Pay was also a big problem for the sailors. The Navy sometimes waited two years to pay them. This made it hard for men to leave their jobs. Many men tried to desert or run away from ships. In the 1790s, over 42,000 sailors deserted the Navy. Some men chose to volunteer to get a cash bonus.

Impressment caused many big problems in the world. It created tension between Britain and the American colonies. This tension helped lead to the American Revolutionary War. One grievance in the Declaration of Independence mentioned this practice. It said people were forced to fight against their own friends. Even today, we learn how these rules shaped history. It shows how nations tried to balance power and freedom.
