It began a long time ago. People used evergreen trees and flowers to invite gods. Later, people used flowers to decorate homes. They placed them in a special space called a tokonoma. This is an alcove, or a small recessed space, in a room.

Many styles of Ikebana exist. One style is called Rikka. It uses a system to show natural scenery. A large branch might represent distant trees. Smaller flowers can show plants in the foreground. Another style is called Seika. This style is simpler and more natural.

Many people find joy in this art. Famous Japanese generals practiced it too. They said it helped calm their minds. It helped them make clear decisions. Some schools of Ikebana are very old. The Ikenobō school started in the 800s. Most schools have a head called an Iemoto. This role often stays in one family for many years. Today, people all over the world practice Ikebana.
