In 2014, things changed in his region. He joined a group called the Luhansk People's Republic. This group wanted to separate from Ukraine. Plotnitsky became a top leader there. He won an election in 2014. He led the group for about three years.

During his time as leader, there was much fighting. In 2016, his car exploded. He was hurt in the blast, but he survived. Some people also argued with him about how to run things.

In late 2017, Plotnitsky left his job. A website said he resigned for health reasons. He had many injuries from the war. A group of leaders voted to accept this.

Later, he faced legal trouble. He was arrested in a Russian jail. The charges were about using power in a wrong way. He was also accused of taking money that did not belong to him.
