In contrast, the winters are characterized by cool and rainy weather. This seasonal rain is vital for the local environment.

Idlib has a long and complex history involving many different empires. In classical antiquity, the Armenian king Tigranes the Great conquered the area. Later, the Roman leader Pompey the Great took control around 64 BCE. The city eventually became part of the province of Roman Syria. It later belonged to the Eastern Roman province of Syria Secunda. Around the middle of the seventh century, the Arabs conquered the city.

North of the city lie the Dead Cities, which are important Byzantine archaeological sites.

During the Ottoman era, Idlib developed into a significant town. It began as a small timar, which is a type of fief. The village of Idlib was founded by Fadil Ahmed Pasha. As the town grew, it developed markets, bathhouses, and caravanserais. These caravanserais, such as Khan Abi Ali and Khan al-Ruz, served travelers. The city became a major center for olive production. This led to a prosperous soap industry. Idlib's soap was exported to major cities like Aleppo and Antioch. It was even sent as far as the Ottoman capital, Istanbul.

The economy of Idlib is heavily based on agriculture. It is a major production center for olives, cotton, and wheat. Farmers also grow various fruits, especially cherries. Other important crops include almonds, sesame seeds, figs, grapes, and tomatoes. In 1995, there were roughly 300 hectares of citrus crops planted. Local industries include olive oil pressing and textiles. The nearby city of Aleppo maintains an important economic presence in the area. The city's economy even saw the Turkish lira used as legal tender from June 2020 until 2025.

In recent years, Idlib has been shaped by the Syrian civil war. The city was a focus of protests and fighting during the early uprising in 2011. Rebel groups temporarily captured the city and the governorate. However, government forces retook the city in April 2012. In March 2015, the Army of Conquest captured the city during the Second Battle of Idlib.

Later, in July 2017, Tahrir al-Sham took full control of the city. In 2018, leaders from Russia and Turkey agreed to create a demilitarized buffer zone. This zone was intended to separate government forces from rebel factions.

Idlib is home to a diverse range of people and cultural interests. The population was 98,791 in 2004 and grew to about 165,000 by 2010. The city is divided into six main districts. These include Ashrafiyah, Hittin, Hejaz, Downtown, Hurriyah, and al-Qusour. The Idlib Regional Museum is a major attraction. It holds over 17,000 Ebla tablets.
