Her career in the film industry spanned 48 years. During this time, she appeared in 59 films and directed eight feature films. She also directed more than 100 episodes of various television shows. Lupino is remembered as the most prominent female filmmaker working in Hollywood during the 1950s. She was a pioneer who used cinema to explore serious social themes.

Lupino's connection to performance began in her childhood in London. Her father was a famous musical comedy star. He even built an outdoor theatre for Ida and her sister, Rita. By age ten, Ida had memorized the leading female roles in Shakespeare's plays. She initially trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Although she wanted to be a writer, she entered film acting to please her father. She began her career in England, often playing "bad girl" roles.

After moving to America, Lupino's acting career grew significantly. She signed a five-year contract with Paramount Pictures in the mid-1930s. Her performance in the 1939 film The Light That Failed changed her reputation. She transformed from a performer of minor roles into a serious dramatic actress. She later worked with major stars like Humphrey Bogart. In 1943, her role in The Hard Way won her the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress.

Lupino eventually sought more control over her creative work. While waiting during studio suspensions, she observed the filming and editing processes. She felt that creating a film was more interesting than just acting. In 1948, she helped form an independent company called The Filmakers Inc.

She served as the vice-president of this company. Alongside Collier Young and Malvin Wald, she aimed to produce low-budget, issue-oriented films. These movies focused on realism and social significance.

The Filmakers Inc. operated with a specific production model. They created "B pictures," which are lower-budget films. These productions were often shot in just two weeks. Each film cost less than US$200,000 to complete. The company aimed to show "how America lives" by telling fact-based stories. This approach allowed them to explore taboo subjects that larger studios often avoided.

Lupino achieved several historic milestones through her directing. In 1949, she stepped in to finish the film Not Wanted after the director fell ill. She did this without taking official credit out of respect for him. In 1953, she directed The Hitch-Hiker, a film noir. This made her the first woman to direct a film in that specific genre. She also directed episodes for many television genres. She was the only woman to direct an episode of the original The Twilight Zone series.

Her films often drew from her own life and social observations. The film Never Fear was based on her personal battle with polio. She also directed films like Outrage, which was one of the first movies about rape. Her work often focused on women trapped by social conventions. On set, she was known for her strong leadership style. She once called herself a "bulldozer" to secure financing. However, her crew also referred to her as the "Mother of Us All."
