Long ago, people studied fish to find food. They also made art of fish on pottery.

A man named Aristotle began formal study. He described 117 kinds of fish. Later, scholars in the 1500s did real research. They compared what they saw to old books. This helped make the science modern.

Many people helped name and group fish. Peter Artedi is called the father of ichthyology. He found new ways to measure fish parts. Carl Linnaeus used these ideas to name fish. He used a system called binomial nomenclature. This is a way to give every fish two names. This helps scientists all over the world.

Today, we know about many species. FishBase says there are 35,800 known species. Scientists still travel to find new ones. They study fish in lakes and oceans. They even study fossils of fish from long ago.
