Iceland is a Nordic island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean.

It sits directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which is a massive underwater mountain range. This ridge marks the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Iceland is unique because it is the only part of this ridge that rises above sea level.

Because it sits on this extensional plate boundary, the island experiences significant geologic activity. This includes frequent volcanic eruptions and the presence of geysers.

The landscape is defined by a central volcanic plateau, mountains, and large glaciers.

Many glacial rivers flow through the lowlands to reach the sea.

The island's climate is shaped by both its latitude and the ocean. Although it sits just south of the Arctic Circle, it is warmed by the Gulf Stream. This ocean current provides a temperate climate that prevents the island from being as cold as its location suggests.

However, the marine influence and high latitude ensure that summers remain chilly. Most of the islands within the country experience a polar climate.

The interior is a rugged environment of sand, lava fields, and massive ice caps.

Even the wildlife, such as the Arctic fox, must adapt to these conditions.

Icelandic history began with Norse exploration in the ninth century. Early travelers like Naddodd and Garðar Svavarsson reached the shores by accident or through circumnavigation.

The name "Iceland" is attributed to Flóki Vilgerðarson, who saw an ice cap after a harsh winter. Permanent settlement began around 874 AD with the chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson.

Early settlers often lived in turf houses to manage the cold.

By 930 AD, the settlers established the Althing. This was a legislative and judicial assembly that formed the Icelandic Commonwealth.

Over many centuries, Iceland's political control shifted through various unions. The independent Commonwealth faced internal strife during the 13th century. This led to Iceland coming under Norwegian rule via the Old Covenant. Later, in 1397, Iceland became part of the Kalmar Union under Denmark. The Danish kingdom eventually imposed Lutheranism by force in 1550.

After the Napoleonic Wars, the Treaty of Kiel in 1814 formally ceded Iceland to Denmark. A long struggle for independence followed, leading to the Danish–Icelandic Act of Union in 1918. Finally, in 1944, Iceland became a republic, ending all formal ties to Denmark.

The environment has presented many challenges to the people living there. During the settlement period, forests covered about 25% to 40% of the land. However, humans cleared much of this for timber and grazing. This caused significant soil erosion and a loss of arable land. The Little Ice Age, starting around 1300, brought even colder weather. Natural disasters also took a heavy toll on the population. The Laki volcano eruption in 1783 caused the "Mist Hardships," leading to famine. During this time, over half of the livestock died and a quarter of the people starved. Additionally, outbreaks of the Black Death and smallpox caused massive loss of life.

Modern Iceland has transformed from a subsistence society into a wealthy, developed nation. For a long time, the economy relied on fishing and agriculture.

After World War II, the industrialization of fisheries and Marshall Plan aid brought prosperity. Today, the economy is diverse, including finance, biotechnology, and manufacturing. Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area and the Council of Europe.

The country maintains a market economy with relatively low taxes. It also features a Nordic social welfare system that provides universal health care. This system contributes to high rankings in quality of life and education.

Today, Iceland is home to approximately 395,000 residents. Reykjavík is the capital and contains about 35% of the population.

The nation is highly stable and ranks well for government transparency and civil liberties. Interestingly, Iceland is the only NATO member with no standing army. It maintains only a lightly armed coast guard. Much of the country's energy comes from its natural volcanic heat.
