Ice is water that has frozen into a solid state.

It usually forms when temperatures reach 0 °C, 32 °F, or 273.15 K. This substance is found all over our world. It exists on Earth and on other planets too. It can even be found in the Oort cloud or in space between stars.

Because it has an ordered structure, scientists call ice a mineral. It can look clear or a bluish-white color. This color depends on things like air bubbles or soil inside it.

Ice works by changing how its tiny parts are packed.

Water is made of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. These parts stay together using something called hydrogen bonds. When water cools down, these bonds pull the molecules into a specific shape. Most ice on Earth forms a six-sided shape called a hexagonal structure. This is known as ice Ih.

This shape makes ice less dense than liquid water. Because it is less dense, ice floats on top of the liquid. This floating layer protects plants and animals living in the water below.

People have found many different ways that ice can exist.

Scientists know of at least nineteen different phases of ice. These phases change depending on the temperature and the pressure. For example, Ice XII was discovered in 1996. Later, in 2006, scientists found Ice XIII and Ice XIV. Other types like Ice XV were found in 2009. Even in deep space, different types of ice exist. In the interstellar medium, a type called low-density amorphous ice is very common. This might be the most abundant type of ice in the whole universe.

Ice is very important for the Earth's climate and water cycle.

It can fall from the sky as snow or hail. It can also form on surfaces as frost. There are two main ways it changes state. Melting is when ice turns into liquid water. Sublimation is when ice turns directly into water vapor.

Recently, the amount of ice on Earth has been going down. This is happening because of climate change. When ice on land melts, it causes the sea levels to rise.

Humans have used ice for many thousands of years.

Long ago, people built structures to hold ice for cooling. Some of these buildings are over 2,000 years old. Before we had refrigerators, ice was the only way to keep food safe. Ice also makes the world more fun for many people. It allows for winter sports like ice skating.

It can even make waterways safe for travel during the winter. This happens when the surface ice is thick enough for roads.
