Because of his deep wisdom, many people call him the greatest mufassir. A mufassir is an expert who explains the meaning of the Qur'an. He was born around the year 619 CE. His father, Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, was an uncle of Muhammad. His mother was Umm al-Fadl Lubaba, who was a close friend of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid.

As a young boy, Ibn Abbas spent a lot of time near Muhammad. He helped with small tasks, like fetching water for ablution. Ablution is a special washing done before prayer. Muhammad often prayed for him to gain great religious knowledge. Ibn Abbas was very serious about learning. He would visit many senior companions to verify their teachings. He was known for a very strict way of checking facts. Sometimes he would wait outside a scholar's door in the hot sun. He believed that knowledge must be sought out actively.

Ibn Abbas also held many leadership roles during difficult times. He supported his cousin Ali during the early struggles for the caliphate. Because of this, he was made the governor of Basra. He later lived in the Hejaz region and traveled to Damascus. He also joined a military expedition to North Africa in 647 CE. This trip was part of a campaign led by Abd Allah ibn Sa'd.

Later in life, he moved to the city of At-Ta'if. He lived there until he passed away, which was likely around 687 or 688 CE.

His home in Medina became a famous center for learning. Many people compare his house to a university. He was very organized with his teaching. He had specific days for different subjects. He taught things like poetry, law, and the pronunciation of the Qur'an. His classes were so popular that crowds would block the roads. To help everyone, he let students enter in shifts. This allowed him to focus on one subject at a time.

Today, the work of Ibn Abbas still affects how people read the Qur'an. The 1924 Cairo edition of the book uses an order of chapters that he helped establish. He also had a large family that continued his legacy. One of his descendants, Ali ibn Abdullah, was the grandfather of the first two Abbasid caliphs. These leaders later ruled the Caliphate in 750 CE. His life shows how much one person's dedication to study can change history.
