It is the third-largest moon in Saturn's family. It is also the eleventh-largest moon in our whole Solar System. This moon is mostly made of ice. It only has about 20% rocky material inside it. This low density means it is quite light for its size. Iapetus has a very strange shape that looks like a walnut. This is because of a huge ridge around its middle. The dark area is called Cassini Regio. The bright areas are called Roncevaux Terra and Saragossa Terra. This happens because of a thing called sublimation. Iapetus was called Saturn VII for a long time. After Hyperion was found in 1848, it became Saturn VIII. This is still its official number today. It is also tidally locked to Saturn. This means it always shows the same face to the planet.

Many people wonder why Iapetus has such a tilted path. Its orbit is very inclined, which means it is tilted.

It ranks as the third-largest moon of Saturn. It is also the eleventh-largest moon in our entire Solar System. The moon is a low-density body made mostly of ice. It contains only about 20% rocky material. This composition gives it a very light structure for its size. Iapetus has a strange, irregular shape. It is not a perfect sphere or an ellipsoid. Instead, it has a bulging waistline and squashed poles. This shape is often described as being walnut-shaped.

A defining feature of Iapetus is its massive equatorial ridge. This ridge runs three-quarters of the way around the moon's middle. It is so high that it visibly distorts the moon's overall shape. The surface is also heavily cratered by many impacts. There are at least five large impact basins. The largest of these is named Turgis. Turgis has a diameter of 350 kilometers. Its rim is extremely steep and includes a high scarp. The moon also supports long-runout landslides called sturzstroms. These landslides are likely supported by sliding ice.

Iapetus is famous for its striking two-tone coloration. This is a massive difference between its two hemispheres. The leading hemisphere is very dark. This region is named Cassini Regio. It has a low albedo, which measures brightness, of only 0.03 to 0.05. The trailing hemisphere and the poles are very bright. These bright regions are called Roncevaux Terra and Saragossa Terra. They have an albedo of 0.5 to 0.6. This makes them almost as bright as the moon Europa.

This color difference happens through a process called sublimation. Sublimation is when ice turns directly into gas. This occurs because of the moon's slow rotation. Iapetus takes 79 days to rotate once. This is the longest rotation in the Saturnian system. Because of this, the dark Cassini Regio gets much warmer. The dark material absorbs more heat from the sun. This heat causes ice to sublimate from the dark areas. The resulting gas moves to the colder, bright regions. There, the gas turns back into solid ice. Over a billion years, this creates a thermal runaway process. This process makes the dark areas even darker and the bright areas even brighter.

Even though it is very far away, it remains locked. It is the most distant tidally locked moon in the Solar System. This unique combination of features makes Iapetus a vital subject for study. It helps us understand how moons form and change over time.
