Iñupiaq language

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Iñupiaq is a special way of speaking. It is used by the Iñupiat people. They live in northern Alaska and parts of Canada. People may have spoken this language for 5,000 years.

There are different ways to speak Iñupiaq. These ways are called dialects. One group is the North Slope Iñupiaq. Another group is the Seward Peninsula Iñupiaq.

In the past, it was hard to use this language. Old schools forced children to speak only English. This made the language decline. Many people stopped teaching it to their children.

Today, people are working hard to bring it back. This is called revitalization. Iñupiaq is now an official language in Alaska. Some schools teach young kids in Iñupiaq. A teacher named Edna Ahgeak MacLean wrote a big dictionary. It has over 19,000 entries. You can even find Iñupiaq on Facebook. There is even a version of the game Wordle in Iñupiaq! These steps help keep the culture strong.
