It was made for her 1977 album, I Remember Yesterday. The creators wanted the song to sound like the future. They used a Moog synthesizer to reach this goal. This machine makes electronic sounds. The song became a huge hit during the disco era. It reached number one in many places. These places included Australia, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It also hit number one on the UK Singles Chart. Many people loved its unique and new sound.

Making the song was a very hard job. The team used a Moog synthesizer borrowed from Eberhard Schoener. This machine went out of tune very quickly. Because of this, they recorded in short bursts. They only recorded 20 or 30 seconds at a time. Then they had to retune the machine. A man named Robby Wedel helped them stay on beat. He used a click track to help the team. Giorgio Moroder called him the "unsung hero" of the project. They also used a 16-track tape recorder to finish it.

Most disco songs used large orchestras for music. This song was different because it used machines. The team used a sequencer to program parts. They even made a hi-hat sound using white noise. The Moog could not make a good kick drum sound. So, a drummer named Keith Forsey played the kick drum. This was the only part not played by a machine. Donna Summer sang her part in just one take. She used her head voice instead of a deep chest voice. This gave the song a special feeling.

The song has a very special way of working. It combines repeating loops with a steady beat. This style helped start techno and house music later. The creators also used a special trick with the bass. They used a delay effect on the bassline. One part plays in the left ear. The repeated part plays in the right ear. This makes a flickering, strobe-like effect for the listener. The song is in the key of C major. It has a length of 5:53 on the album version.

This song changed music history forever. The singer David Bowie said it sounded like the future. He said it would change club music for years. Many famous artists were influenced by it. These include David Bowie, Blondie, and Kylie Minogue. In 2011, the Library of Congress added it to a special registry. They said it is culturally and historically important. It is now seen as a foundation for electronic dance music. Even Beyoncé used it in her 2022 song "Summer Renaissance."
