They sailed on the first Dutch trading expedition, the Eerste Schipvaart, to the East Indies. Astronomer Petrus Plancius used their observations to create Hydrus as one of twelve new constellations.

The constellation first appeared on a 35-cm diameter celestial globe in Amsterdam in late 1597 or early 1598. It was later included in Johann Bayer's 1603 celestial atlas, the Uranometria. In 1756, the French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille charted the brighter stars. He provided them with Bayer designations, which are specific labels used to identify stars. Lacaille also Latinized the name to Hydrus in his 1763 work, Coelum Australe Stelliferum.

Many unique types of stars reside within the boundaries of Hydrus. Beta Hydri is the brightest star in the constellation, with an apparent magnitude of 2.8. It is a yellow subgiant star located 24 light-years from Earth. A subgiant is a star that is more evolved than the Sun because it is exhausting its core hydrogen fuel. Beta Hydri is 181% of the Sun's radius and has more than three times the Sun's luminosity. It is also the closest bright star to the south celestial pole. Because it is between 6.4 and 7.1 billion years old, it resembles what our Sun might look like in the distant future.

Another significant star is Gamma Hydri, a red giant located 214 light-years away. This star is a semi-regular variable, meaning its brightness pulses between magnitudes 3.26 and 3.33. It is massive, ranging from 1.5 to 2 times the mass of the Sun. It has expanded to roughly 60 times the Sun's diameter and shines with 655 times the Sun's luminosity. Nearby is VW Hydri, which is one of the brightest dwarf novae in the sky. A dwarf nova is a close binary system where a white dwarf pulls matter from a companion star. This matter forms a bright accretion disk, causing frequent eruptions and occasional supereruptions.

Astronomers have also discovered several planetary systems within this constellation. The star HD 10180 is particularly notable because it could bear up to nine planetary companions. This is a higher number of planets than have been found in our own Solar System. The star GJ 3021 is a solar twin, meaning it is very similar to our Sun. It is located 57 light-years away and has a Jovian planet named GJ 3021 b. This planet is at least 3.37 times the mass of Jupiter. Additionally, the star HD 20003 hosts two planets that are much larger than Earth.

Beyond individual stars, Hydrus contains fascinating deep-sky objects. The White Rose Galaxy, or PGC 6240, is a giant spiral galaxy located 345 million light-years away. It is surrounded by shells that look like rose petals. This galaxy likely formed after a merger with another galaxy. The constellation also contains the spiral galaxy NGC 1511. Parts of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy to the Milky Way, also extend into Hydrus. This includes the globular cluster NGC 1466, which is thought to be over 12 billion years old.

Understanding Hydrus helps scientists study the lifecycle of stars and galaxies. By observing stars like Beta Hydri, astronomers can learn about the future of our own Sun. The study of dwarf novae like VW Hydri provides data on how matter moves between stars in binary systems. Even mysterious objects, like the missing comet once recorded as IC 1717, contribute to our celestial maps. Hydrus serves as a vital window into the deep southern heavens and the complex mechanics of the universe.
