Hydrostatic equilibrium

Have you ever wondered why planets are round?

Hydrostatic equilibrium
Hydrostatic equilibrium

It is because of a special balance. Scientists call this hydrostatic equilibrium. This balance happens when two forces stay even. One force is gravity. Gravity pulls everything inward. The other force is pressure. Pressure is a push from a fluid, like air or water.

On Earth, these forces work together. Gravity pulls our air toward the ground. But the pressure of the air pushes back out. This stops the air from crashing into the Earth. It also stops the air from floating away into space. This same balance works in the stars. It even makes objects in space look like round balls. This shape is often called an ellipsoid. Most big things in our solar system follow this rule. The Sun is one of these big objects. Besides the Sun, we know of about twelve other objects like this. They are mostly round because of this force balance.

This rule helps us tell things apart. It helps us know if a space object is a dwarf planet.
